No production without people - despite contradictory forecasts proclaiming massive job losses due to technological progress, this expression still holds true. And it will hold true in future according to Prof. Netland and Prof. Guzzella who explained their opinion in a recently published blog post on the World Economic Forum webpage.

Technological progress implies the introduction of Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things, robots and other (new) technologies into manufacturing plants. Certainly, some manufacturing tasks performed by humans will change as part of this process, but they will not disappear. New technologies improve existing manufacturing processes and free up human resources that will be used for tasks where humans are superior to machines. It remains a human task to enable sustainable, socially responsible, and efficient production systems. This way, most of the manufacturing jobs will remain largely unaffected in the near term and humans will stay an important element in the future of production.
